One Rescued & One Presumed Dead After Boat Capsizes

EVERETT, Wash. -- A man who was tossed into the chilly Puget Sound waters after his boat capsized Monday afternoon is now presumed drowned.

The 12-foot dinghy flipped in Port Gardner Bay near Everett around 12:45 p.m., tossing two men into the water, Coast Guard officials said.

One of the men was able to tread water for about an hour until a Good Samaritan rescued him and took him back to shore. That man was taken to a local hospital. He was treated and released Monday evening.

Coast Guard helicopters searched from the air for the other victim while police and fire boats looked from the water, but came up empty. Rescue crews suspended the active search just before 5 p.m. and are now focused on finding and recovering his body, officials said.

Later Monday evening, crews said they were going to use side-scan sonar, which can locate small objects under water.

Neither victim has been identified.

Investigators haven't said yet what caused the boat to capsize

Chicagoans Witness Fire Boat Racing to Action

What does a Chicago Fire Department boat look like racing to the scene of an emergency? Pretty much the same as a Chicago Fire Department car racing to the scene of an emergency.
It turns out that this fireboat is equipped with the same lights an siren as you’d find on a regular fire truck. And from a distance, as its racing toward you, you might think that it’s actually a fire SUV on an adjacent street before you realize that it’s actually in the river.
In this case, the fire boat was rushing to rescue someone who was floating down the river in Bridgeport on an old dock that broke loose from the shore.

FDNY Opens New Quarters for Marine 9; 2 Members Promoted

The new quarters of Marine 9 on Staten Island

With the Manhattan skyline in the background, the FDNY celebrated the opening of the new, state-of-the-art firehouse for Marine 9 on Staten Island.

Also part of the celebrations was a small promotions ceremony for Provisional Pilot Scott Forget and Provisional Marine Engineer James Hohorst, both of Marine 9.

This is the latest step in a modernization of the Marine Unit, Fire Commissioner Salvatore Cassano said during the ceremony on May 10. Its a proud day for the members of Marine 9, Marine Operations and the entire Department.

FDNY worked closely with the New York City Economic Development Corporation and the State Department of Environmental Conservation to secure land to construct the new $24 million, two-story, 10,500-square-foot facility to house the modern fireboat, the Fire Fighter II.

This couldnt be a prouder moment for the FDNY, Chief of Department Edward Kilduff said. People in this administration including planning, grants and building design put together a unified vision. It was a process that was rewarding for everyone involved.

Chief of Marine Operations James Dalton added, This is the fruit of everyones hard labor … We got a lot of support to get here today.

This new firehouse has several green initiatives, making it one of the Departments most energy efficient buildings. Sustainable elements include a planted green roof, which provides for storm water retention and filtering, as well providing additional insulation; solar thermal collectors used to heat water in the firehouse and provide supplemental heat for the building; and automatic lighting controls used to minimize energy consumption.

Fire Fighter II was commissioned and assigned to Marine 9 on Dec. 7, 2010, and replaced the former 72-year-old ship, the Fire Fighter. One of the two most advanced fireboats in the world - the other being Three Forty Three assigned to FDNY Marine 1 in Manhattan Fire Fighter II has the capability of pumping 50,000 gallons of water per minute and the ability to detect and protect firefighters from chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear agents.

I cant say enough about how hard everyone worked to make this a reality, said Marine 9 Captain John Stark. Today were opening on of the finest firehouses in all of New York.

Man Survives Boat fire in North Kitsap, One Dog Dies

SUQUAMISH, Wash. - A man was rescued from a 30-foot motor boat that went up in flames Thursday morning as it floated in the placid blue waters between Bainbridge Island and the Kitsap Peninsula.

The fire broke out at about 6:45 a.m. after the man piloted his boat, the "Liberty Call," out of the Brownsville Marina and was heading through Agate Passage, said a North Kitsap Fire Department spokesperson.

A friend was following behind in another boat and was able to rescue the man as flames spread through the vessel. But the man was unable to get his dog off the boat and it died in the blaze.

The fire continued burning for some time before crews were able to reach it. Aerial footage shot by KOMO's Air 4 showed the blaze burning fiercely and a tall column of smoke rising above it as it drifted through Agate Passage.

The boat has continued drifting since northward the fire. It is still smoking, but the fire appears to be out. The vessel is considered a total loss.

The Coast Guard is now on the scene to monitor the boat.

—A man was saved but a dog perished in a boat fire this morning in Agate Passage, according to North Kitsap Fire and Rescue.

Crews were called to waterway, in between North Kitsap and Bainbridge Island, about 6:45 a.m. A 30-foot motor vessel was ablaze and Poulsbo Fire Department and North Kitsap crews responded by land and by sea, said North Kitsap spokeswoman Michele Laboda.

Crews learned a passing boat, helmed by a boater whose craft is moored at the Brownsville Marina, was able to come alongside the burning boat and save its occupant, who moors his boat at the same marina. But they were unable to get the dog, Laboda said.

North Kitsap's fire boat, a Coast Guard boat and private vessels sprayed the burning craft with water and foam to get the fire extinguished. The man did not have any reported injuries.

Welcome to Boats and Hose

Boats and Hose will be an information sharing blog showing different fire and rescue boats from all over the world.  It will share information on design, construction, capabilities, staffing, training, operations, response profiles and anything else we can conjure.

Every so often we will spotlight one department and their operation.  Our inaugural department is the Baltimore City Fire Department in Baltimore, Maryland, USA.

Baltimore operates four fire boats from their station at Fort McHenry.  Two of the boats, one fire boat and one fire rescue boat, are staffed, 24/7/365; the other two are ready reserves, available for use at any time when a proper crew is present.
The first line fire boat is the John R. Frazier.  The "Frazier" was built in 2007 by Hike Metal Products, Ltd in Wheatley, ON Canada.  It is 87 feet long with an aluminum hull and capable of pumping 7,000 gpm.  A minimum crew of four staffs the Frazier; one Fire Officer, one Marine Pilot, one Marine Engineer and either a second Marine Engineer or a Firefighter.  If staffing permits, a fifth person, Firefighter, would also be on the crew.  The Marine Pilot must have a minimum USCG License for 100 Tons Inland.  The Marine Pilot must have a minimum USCG License for 440 horsepower.  The Firefighter on the deck and the Fire Officer have no additional training requirements.

The reserve fire boat is the Mayor Thomas D'Alesandro, Jr. The "Tommy" was built in 1956 and is made of all steel.  The pumping capability of the Tommy is 12,000 gpm.  This vessel is typically only used when the Frazier is out of service or for larger operations if a proper crew is available.

The unit also operates a fire rescue boat.  There are twin fire rescue boats.  They were built in 2003 by SeaArk Marine. They are 30 feel long and have an aluminum hull.  One fire rescue boat is staffed 24/7/365 with a crew of two, while the other vessel is a ready reserve.  Minimum staffing for the fire rescue boat is one Emergency Boat Operator and either a second Emergency Boat Operator or a Firefighter.  An Emergency Boat Operator must either have a USCG Operator of Uninspected Vessel (6 pack) license or have a Maryland Fire Service Personnel Qualifications Board Certificate as a Mate 2.

Baltimore City is has 11 square miles of water within the City limits.  The inner harbor is the northwest extension of the Patapsco River which empties into the Chesapeake Bay.  The Baltimore Fire Boat is known as the only "large fire boat" on the entire Chesapeake Bay.
